Shian is a community based housing association, which was established in 1989 to cater for the general housing needs of ethnic minority people in Hackney and neighbouring areas. Shian's roots are a voluntary organisation called Harambee II which provided short term housing, youth training, a community drop in centre and welfare services for the local community as well as support for ex-offenders.

The word 'shian' means 'home' in the Ghanaian language Ga. It is this which Shian has strived to provide. Not just bricks and mortar but a home our clients can identify with. The Association provides culturally sensitive housing, designed to enrich the community and encourage harmony in our multi-ethnic society. The Association now works in the three boroughs of Hackney, Haringey and Islington.

Our Mission Statement:

"Shian is a housing organisation providing culturally specific services, primarily to vulnerable black and ethnic minority families and individuals in urban areas.

We promote cohesion, empower our communities, raise aspirations, improve the quality of lives and ensure our customers have the opportunity to access high quality services."
