Makeda Weaver Project

Makeda Weaver Project offers young men the opportunity and support to change their life. If they are involved with gangs, guns, and violence we will redirect their life path. With nearly twenty years experience of working with ex-offenders and those at risk of offending in our team we are well placed to make a difference. Our team has backgrounds from probation and youth justice, youth work and sports. Our ethos is to mentor support ex-offenders with the safety of the community in mind. We are still very much in touch with the streets and believe this to be important in the way we work to improve conditions for BME communities. We offer cognitive life style group work programmes addressing: offending; victim empathy and social skills tools; solution focused 1-2-1 sessions; one–to-one mentoring sessions; life skills; budgeting and housing support; housing and relocation options; training; work experience and employment opportunities.

As well as the group work, it is hoped that all suitable clients will give up a certain amount of free time for voluntary work within the community. During this time they will have the opportunity to develop their social skills and work place skills. Giving the clients basic group work facilitator training will enable them to communicate more effectively and gain confidence. Facilitating sessions for schools and youth groups will give clients a sense of responsibility; increase their self esteem, while highlighting the need and benefit of them taking part in some form of reparation.

Clients will get a reference from the project after completing a minimum amount of hours. Those that enjoy and indeed continue the voluntary work will be supported to develop their work skills further and with the development of the project we hope to be able to offer clients more varied voluntary work, paid work and opportunities for further self development.

Our project aims to provide:

a) Accommodation for 12 young men dispersed in Shian’s own housing stock or the stock of other housing associations. A further 12 will be supported initially in their own accommodation until there is housing available for them.

b) Two dedicated outreach support workers led by a manager who will work with these young people.

c) An individual support plan for each client shaped according to his needs.

d) An individual training programme designed to equip the client with a skill that will secure him good employment.

e) Assistance with securing a job.

f) A programme of permanent housing away from their usual hang outs.

Potential clients are identified through outreach and street work but also through referrals from school teachers, personal tutors, police, job centres, social workers and probation officers. We are building a network of potential referral agents.

An Annual Review of the Makeda Weaver Project was undertaken at the end of the period 2006/07. If you would like to read this review please here.
